May Night, or the Drowned Maiden

Main Characters and Their Development

• Levko - the main character, a young man, the son of the village headman. He is in love with Hanna and strives to win her hand despite his father's opposition. Levko shows courage and determination when faced with mystical events and helps the drowned maiden find peace.
• Hanna - Levko's beloved, a beautiful and kind girl. She also loves Levko, but their happiness is hindered by Levko's father. Hanna embodies purity and loyalty.
• The Village Headman - Levko's father, a powerful and strict man. He is against his son's marriage to Hanna and tries to thwart their relationship. By the end of the story, he softens and gives his blessing to their union.
• The Drowned Maiden - the spirit of a girl who drowned due to unrequited love. She appears to Levko and asks him to help her find peace. Levko fulfills her request, and the drowned maiden finds rest.
