Summary

«A Terrible Vengeance» is a novella by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, included in the collection «Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka». At the heart of the plot is the story of a series of tragic events in a Cossack family caused by the misdeeds of a sorcerer. The main character, Cossack Danilo Burulbash, discovers that his father-in-law is a sorcerer who has brought much suffering and misfortune to people. The sorcerer kills Danilo's son and then Danilo himself. Danilo's wife, Katerina, in despair, throws herself from a tower. In the end, the sorcerer receives his just punishment: his soul ends up in hell, where he suffers eternally for his sins.
