Brief Overview

The novel «Where Angels Fear to Tread» by Edward Morgan Forster tells the story of a young widow, Lilia Herriton, who travels to Italy to recover after her husband's death. There, she falls in love with a young Italian, Gino Carella, and decides to marry him, much to the dismay of her English family. Concerned about Lilia's reputation and future, the Herriton family sends her mother-in-law and her late husband's brother to Italy to prevent the marriage. However, their efforts fail, and Lilia remains in Italy. Soon after, she dies in childbirth, leaving behind a son, which sparks a new wave of conflict between the families. The English family tries to take the child back to England but faces cultural and moral dilemmas. The novel explores themes of cultural differences, prejudice, and human relationships, showing how attempts to control the destinies of others can lead to tragic consequences.
