Main Characters and Their Development

• Edmond Dantès - a young successful sailor, unjustly accused of treason and sentenced to life imprisonment on the island of If. With the help of an ally, he finds the treasure of the Spada family and becomes the wealthy and influential Count of Monte Cristo. He dedicates his life to avenging those who betrayed him.
• Mercedes - Edmond Dantès's first and true love. She becomes the wife of Fernand, one of the conspirators against Edmond, after Dantès is imprisoned. She later realizes her mistake and suffers the consequences of her decisions.
• Fernand Mondego - a fisherman in love with Mercedes and one of the conspirators against Edmond. He becomes a successful soldier and the Count de Morcerf. His past is eventually revealed, leading to his downfall in the eyes of society.
• Danglars - a ship's purser who also participated in the conspiracy against Dantès. He becomes a wealthy banker, but his greed and betrayal ultimately lead to his downfall.
• Villefort - the prosecutor who handled Edmond Dantès's case. Driven by ambition and trying to hide his own dark secrets, he sends Dantès to prison. Eventually, his own secrets are exposed, ruining his life and career.
• Abbé Faria - a fellow prisoner who becomes a friend and mentor to Edmond, sharing knowledge and the secret of the treasure. His death provides Edmond the opportunity to escape.
