Brief Overview
The novel «When Nietzsche Wept» by Irvin Yalom tells the story of a fictional meeting between the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche and Dr. Josef Breuer, one of the founders of psychoanalysis. The action takes place in Vienna at the end of the 19th century. Lou Salomé, Nietzsche’s former lover, asks Breuer to help the philosopher, who is suffering from depression and migraines. Breuer agrees, and a complex therapeutic and philosophical dialogue develops between him and Nietzsche. During the course of treatment, both men confront their inner demons and existential questions, leading to profound changes in their lives.
