Main Characters and Their Development

• Andrew Manson - a young and idealistic doctor who initially works in a small coal mining town in Wales. Throughout the story, he tries to fight corruption in medical practice, then moves to London, where he faces the realities of the medical business. Gradually, his ideals clash with harsh reality, forcing him to rethink his attitude towards medicine and personal values.
• Christine Barlow - Andrew's devoted and supportive wife, who shares his ideals and tests them alongside her husband. Her character undergoes significant development as she confronts the realities of her husband's life as a doctor and the challenges it presents to their personal life and relationship.
