Main Characters and Their Development

• James Brodie (also known as Gatter) - the despotic and vain head of the family, owner of a shop in a small Scottish town. His life experiences a series of downfalls and catastrophes due to his egoism and pursuit of social superiority, leading to the tragedy of his entire family.
• Mary Brodie - Gatter's daughter, a woman of strong spirit and will. She seeks independence and love, but her paths lead to tragic consequences due to conflict with her father and societal expectations.
• Nancy - the younger daughter, naive and sensitive, whose life is shattered by her father's ambitions and actions.
• Matthew Brodie - the only son of James Brodie, also falls victim to his father's reckless ambitions and is doomed to unhappiness.
