Main Characters and Their Development

• Sherlock Holmes — the main detective who uses his outstanding analytical abilities to unravel the mystery of the dancing men. In this story, he demonstrates his deductive skills and attention to detail, allowing him to solve a complex case and prevent a tragedy.
• Dr. John Watson — Holmes's loyal friend and assistant, who accompanies him in the investigation. Watson serves as the chronicler, recording events and assisting Holmes in his investigations, although he does not possess the same analytical abilities.
• Hilton Cubitt — Holmes's client, who seeks his help after his wife begins receiving strange messages in the form of dancing men. He genuinely loves his wife and is concerned for her safety.

• Abe Slaney — the antagonist of the story, Elsie's former lover, who uses the dancing men cipher to communicate with her. His arrival in England and attempts to win back Elsie lead to dramatic events.
