The Man in a Case

Main Characters and Their Development

• Belikov — the main character of the story, a Greek language teacher. He lives in constant fear of life and seeks to shield himself from the outside world by creating a 'case' of rules and restrictions around himself. His life is full of rituals and prohibitions, making him isolated and unhappy. Ultimately, his fears and limitations lead to his death.
• Varenka — the sister of Mikhail Kovalenko, a cheerful and energetic woman who becomes the object of Belikov's interest. She tries to bring joy and freedom into his life, but her efforts are in vain. Varenka symbolizes the opposite of Belikov, representing openness and zest for life.
• Mikhail Kovalenko — a history and geography teacher, Varenka's brother. He is straightforward and independent, which irritates Belikov. Mikhail openly opposes Belikov and his 'case-like' life, ultimately leading to a conflict between them.
