Main Characters and Their Development

• Olga Ivanovna Dymova - the main character, a young woman who leads a frivolous and superficial life. She is interested in art but lacks deep knowledge or genuine interest in it. Throughout the story, she remains selfish and oblivious to her husband's suffering.
• Osip Stepanovich Dymov - Olga Ivanovna's husband, a doctor devoted to his profession. He is a kind, patient, and loving man who genuinely cares for his wife. At the end of the story, he dies from diphtheria contracted from a patient, highlighting his selflessness and dedication to his work.
