Main Characters and Their Development

• Misail Poloznev — the main character, son of an architect. At the beginning of the book, he abandons his privileged life and job to become a simple laborer. His development involves searching for life's meaning and inner harmony through physical labor and a simple life.
• Maria Viktorovna Dolzhikova — the daughter of a wealthy landowner who falls in love with Misail and marries him. She also seeks a simple life and tries to find her place in the world, but ultimately becomes disillusioned and leaves.
• Andrey Ivanovich Poloznev — Misail's father, an architect. He does not understand or accept his son's choice, leading to conflict between them. His development shows a gradual realization and acceptance of his son's decision, albeit with great difficulty.
• Kleopatra Petrovna — Misail's sister, who supports him in his aspirations and also seeks her own path in life. She remains true to her ideals and supports her brother in his struggles.
