Main Characters and Their Development
- Dmitry Ionitch Startsev — the main character, a zemstvo doctor. At the beginning of the story, he is portrayed as a young and energetic person, full of ideals and aspirations. However, over time, influenced by his surroundings and disappointments, he becomes indifferent, cynical, and immersed in routine. His life loses meaning, and he turns into a fat, lazy, and apathetic man.
- Ekaterina Ivanovna Turkin (Kotik) — the daughter of wealthy parents, a talented pianist. At the beginning of the story, she is portrayed as a cheerful and ambitious girl dreaming of a career as a musician. However, over time her dreams do not come true, and she becomes an ordinary provincial lady, losing her former liveliness and enthusiasm.
- Vera Iosifovna Turkin — Ekaterina Ivanovna's mother, the mistress of the house. She is depicted as a superficial and self-satisfied woman, absorbed in her petty interests and social conversations. Her character and behavior remain unchanged throughout the story.
- Ivan Petrovich Turkin — Ekaterina Ivanovna's father, a wealthy and respected man in town. He enjoys organizing home performances and reading his works. His character also undergoes no significant changes, remaining just as self-satisfied and superficial.
