Summary
«The Good Person of Szechwan» is a play by Bertolt Brecht that tells the story of a young woman named Shen Te, living in a poor Chinese town. Three gods descend to Earth in search of at least one good person, and Shen Te is the only one willing to offer them shelter. As a reward for her kindness, they give her money, which she uses to buy a tobacco shop. However, Shen Te soon faces difficulties: her kindness is exploited by those around her, and she is forced to pretend to be her ruthless cousin Shui Ta to protect herself and her business. The play explores themes of morality, kindness, and social justice, raising questions about whether it is possible to remain good in a world full of injustice and exploitation.
