Main Characters and Their Development

• William Halloway - A thirteen-year-old boy, one of the two main protagonists. William is thoughtful and cautious. Throughout the book, he undergoes many trials that help him understand the importance of friendship and bravery. His relationship with his father, Charles Halloway, also plays a crucial role in his development, strengthening their mutual understanding and trust.
• Jim Nightshade - William's best friend, also a thirteen-year-old boy. Jim is more impulsive and prone to taking risks. His desire to grow up and explore the unknown leads him into dangerous situations. Over the course of the book, Jim learns to appreciate his life and friendship with William, realizing that growing up doesn't always bring the desired results.
• Charles Halloway - William's father, a librarian. He feels old and useless, but throughout the book, he finds the strength and courage to stand against evil. His wisdom and love for his son help him overcome inner fears and become a true hero.
• Mr. Dark - The main antagonist, the owner of the sinister carnival. He embodies evil and uses people's fears and desires to manipulate them. Mr. Dark represents the force that the main characters must fight to save themselves and their town.
• Miss Foley - A teacher who becomes a victim of the carnival. Her desire to regain her youth leads to tragic consequences. Her story serves as a warning that desires can be dangerous if they are based on illusions.
