• Marc Marronnier - the main character and narrator of the book. At the beginning of the story, he is a cynical and disillusioned man who claims that love only lasts three years. He goes through a divorce with his wife Anna and starts a new romance with Alice. As the plot develops, Marc goes through various stages of realization and reevaluation of his views on love and relationships. By the end of the book, he concludes that love can be eternal if one works on it.
• Anna - Marc's ex-wife. Their relationship begins with great passion but gradually fades, confirming Marc's theory of the three-year limit. Anna represents a woman disillusioned with marriage, seeking new paths to happiness.
• Alice - Marc's new love interest. She becomes a symbol of new hope and the possibility of a long-term relationship for him. Alice helps Marc reconsider his beliefs about love and understand that feelings can be deeper and more enduring than he thought.
