Main Characters and Their Development

• Bonbon (Mephistopheles Bonbon) — the main character and narrator, an African American who attempts to restore segregation and slavery in his hometown of Dickens to bring back its former glory. His actions spark public outcry and lead to a Supreme Court trial.
• Hominy Jenkins — an elderly African American, former actor, who voluntarily becomes Bonbon's slave. His character symbolizes the complex relationship with the history and memory of slavery.
