Main Characters and Their Development

• Alex Stern, full name Galaxy Stern, is the central figure in the novel Ninth House. She is a young woman with a difficult past, having endured many trials. Alex possesses the unique ability to see ghosts, which makes her special and sets her apart from others. Her life before attending Yale University was filled with hardships related to drugs and the criminal world. However, given a chance to start anew, she becomes a member of the secret society "Lethe," which oversees other magical societies at the university. Throughout the narrative, Alex undergoes an internal transformation, learning to embrace her power and use it to fight injustice. Her character evolves from a vulnerable and lost girl to a confident and determined woman, ready to face dangers to protect others.
• Daniel Arlington, known as Darlington, is Alex's mentor in "Lethe." He is a charismatic and intellectual young man with deep knowledge of magic and the history of secret societies. Darlington is the heir to an old family, which places certain obligations and expectations on him. At the beginning of the novel, he appears as a confident and somewhat arrogant character, but as the plot develops, his vulnerability and desire for redemption are revealed. His relationship with Alex becomes complex and multilayered, as they learn to trust each other and work as a team despite differences in background and worldview.
