Main Characters and Their Development

• Renée Michel - a concierge in an upscale Parisian building who hides her intellect and love for art to conform to the stereotypes of her profession. Throughout the book, she is revealed as a deep and sensitive person capable of friendship and understanding.
• Paloma Josse - a twelve-year-old girl living in the same building as Renée. Disillusioned with the adult world, she plans to end her life on her thirteenth birthday. However, as the story unfolds, she finds meaning in life and friendship through Renée and the new tenant, Mr. Ozu.
• Kakuro Ozu - a Japanese businessman who moves into the building and becomes a catalyst for change for Renée and Paloma. His kindness and understanding help them both open up and change their views on life.
