Main Characters and Their Development

• Alma Belasco - the main character, who was sent from Poland to San Francisco as a child to escape the Nazi regime. She grows up in a wealthy family and falls in love with the Japanese gardener Ichimei, which becomes the central theme of her life. Alma endures many trials, including war and separation, but maintains her love and devotion.
• Ichimei Fukuda - a Japanese gardener working at the Belasco estate. He and Alma fall in love, but their relationship faces numerous obstacles, including racial prejudice and historical events such as the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Ichimei remains faithful to his love for Alma throughout his life.
• Irina Bazili - a young woman working at the nursing home where Alma lives. Irina has a complicated past involving violence and poverty, but she finds solace and support in her friendship with Alma and her grandson Seth. Irina gradually opens up her feelings and learns to trust people.
• Seth Belasco - Alma's grandson, who assists Irina in her work and in uncovering his grandmother's past. He plays a crucial role in revealing the love story of Alma and Ichimei, as well as supporting Irina in her personal journey.
